Hi there
Aah, the first E-Zine of 08. Good feeling isn't it? Soul Purpose took a little bit of a breather over summer (that is, until Soul Survivor, a new magazine, Big Day Out and Parachute 08 landed themselves on our doorstep), but now we're back in full swing!
In fact, our swing is so full we've brought someone else on board. Starting last week as editor, we're totally stoked to have Ben Kendrew join Hayden and Elliot on staff. Ben is here to make Soul Purpose a better read, so welcome him and share with him what you want to see in SP!
Also, we're looking for people who would like to support Ben financially. Currently he's working part time and we'd love to build the support up so he can work full-time (and put food on the table). If you're interested, flick us an email.
More exciting news in other exciting areas to come. Enjoy all the tasty content in this, our Valentine's Day special!
Mucho amor,
E.

Finding Love on Valentine's
by Sara Watts
She loves him. He loves her not. She thought she did. Now she’s not so sure. He loves her but is afraid to say so because of the ‘c’ word (commitment, for those still guessing). She stole him from her. He only liked her as a friend, but was there more?
Ah, the wonderful world of relationships. On Valentine’s Day we put it all on show for the world to see, unveiling our hearts through over-priced roses and boxes of chocolates destined to break many New Year’s resolutions. Today, have a look around and you’ll find yourself indulging in the entire spectrum of responses to PDA from the “Oooh too cute” to the cringing “Ewww get a room.”
Whether they’re an “Oooh” type or more of a “Ewww” type, relationships always make for great conversation fodder. Everyone has something to say on the matter, so as you’d expect, there is an abundance of differing opinions on good relationship advice. You’ve probably heard everything from “Commitment is over-rated anyway!” to “Don’t pash till you’re both at the altar.” But I’ve decided that my only advice I’m willing to give and take on relationships is to compare them to another relationship that far out-weighs them all.
Jesus gave His life so we could have relationship with God. He doesn’t just love us one day and forget about us for the other six. It's not a matter of when He feels like loving us, or if He can be bothered today. He loves us no matter what and is telling us everyday – that is, if we take the time to listen. Shouldn’t our earthly relationships reflect something of the example God is giving us?
A friend of mine once wrote a mock love song that went like this: “I'm moderately in love with you. It’s the co-dependency that’s keeping us together. I'm mildly attracted to you. It's just that I don’t think I could do any better.”
We laugh, but often this little song can be the truth in our own lives. Is your relationship with that special someone, or your musing over how you wish you had one, honouring God with your time? Are you depending on someone to fill the hole that should be filled with Jesus? Are you forcing yourself to be in a relationship with just anyone, instead of waiting for God's timing for that someone?
But not to get to heavy on the topic, being that it is Valentine’s Day, go out there and tell someone that you love them. Anyone. That girl. That boy. Your mum. Your dad. Even your next door neighbour! Just don’t miss out on telling someone, because, like my family discovered three years ago when my cousin died on Valentine’s, you never know when it might be the last time to tell them so!
