Rain-ing Champs

Rain-ing Champs

FOOTBALL: A saturated field didn’t stop defending champions Victoria winning the men’s football tournament. Victoria beat their opponent’s Auckland University 1-0 to regain gold. Players splashed through ankle deep puddles competing for the ball while dodging the rugged terrain created by the rain. Team members who were not participating showed their support and cheered on their squad losing their voices along the way. Auckland didn’t go home disappointed believing that Victoria didn’t have an easy win, they also vowed they are in it to win next year.

WOMENS FOOTBALL: The Mighty Waikato triumphs over their City of Sails counter-parts in what was called “a thriller soccer final.” When the rain wasn’t interfering with their sight, Waikato only had eyes for the goal at the other end of the field. With 15 minutes to go it looked like the AUT girls were on the charge but the Waikato defense was too strong. It was Waikato’s long kicking game that won it for them at 2 - 1.

The sun decided to show itself to the players and the crowd although the pitch was still damp under foot it didn’t manage to put the champions off their game. In the final minutes of the game the crowd got behind their team to bring home gold and conquer the quest they set out for. Canterbury have won the league competition three years running.

TOUCH: AUT came away with a win in the men’s touch final, beating Waiariki Institute of Technology 4-3. The game could have gone either way but a sin bin in the early quarter of the second half proved to be an advantage for AUT. Waiariki had plenty of opportunities for a comeback but with the atrocious weather conditions the ball proved to be more of a challenge then the competitors.

MIXED TOUCH: More gold is heading AUT’s way after they beat their Moo- Loo rivals in the mixed touch division. The game went into over time resulting in a drop-off where players left the field of play every couple of minutes. Although the game saw patches of rain it ended up being a high scoring game, the final score 7-6 to AUT.

A-Town Styles

HOCKEY: Defending champions Auckland University blitzed their opposition 4-0 to regain the number one spot taking out the Men’s hockey competition. AUT who were labeled as the underdogs fought hard to win but let themselves down in the final minutes of the game. The ball seemed to be impossible to move through the rain drenched pitch and would only travel a few meters compared to the 6 meters on a sunny day. Auckland proved they were a threat and came away with the gold medal.
